Tooth Brushing

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene by properly caring for your teeth. One of the key habits to adopt is brushing your teeth at least two times each day, with special emphasis on brushing before going to bed at night. To ensure effective brushing, it is recommended to use an ADA-approved toothbrush with soft bristles and an appropriate toothpaste.

When brushing your teeth, position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards the gums and gently brush in small, circular motions. This technique ensures that you can feel the bristles making contact with your gums. Take care to brush all surfaces of each tooth, including the outer, inner, and biting areas. Additionally, use the tip of the brush to clean the inside surface of your front teeth.

It is also beneficial to brush your tongue as part of your oral hygiene routine. This helps remove bacteria and keeps your breath fresh. Electric toothbrushes are excellent options as well. They are easy to use and effectively remove plaque from your teeth. Simply place the bristles of the electric brush on your gums and teeth, allowing the brush to efficiently clean multiple teeth at once.

Flossing

Flossing on a daily basis is the most effective method to thoroughly clean the areas between your teeth and below the gumline. Flossing not only aids in the removal of debris from these spaces, but it also disrupts the formation of plaque colonies, thus safeguarding the health of your gums, teeth, and underlying bone. To begin flossing, take about 12 to 16 inches (30 to 40cm) of dental floss and gently wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving approximately 2 inches (5cm) of floss between your hands. Utilizing your thumbs and forefingers as guides, slowly insert the floss between your teeth using a sawing motion. Form a gentle curve in the shape of a “C” around each tooth and beneath the gumline. Delicately move the floss up and down, effectively cleaning the sides of each tooth. If you encounter difficulties with conventional flossing, it is advisable to use floss holders.

Rinsing

Ensuring proper oral hygiene involves rinsing your mouth with water after brushing your teeth and after meals if brushing is not possible. If you opt for an over-the-counter mouth rinse, it is advisable to seek guidance from your dentist or dental hygienist to determine its suitability for you. Additionally, you should incorporate other dental tools as suggested by your dental professional, such as interdental brushes, rubber tip stimulators, tongue cleaners, irrigation devices, fluoride, medicated rinses, and more, to effectively maintain good oral care at home.
